AKonnyaku is a gelatinous cake with an appealing chewy texture and zero fat used in traditional Japanese cooking.  Konnyaku is made from a tropical plant native to Asia that is similar to taro, and the paste is coloured black or white.  Often the cake is run through a machine to make noodles called Shirataki.  It is flavourless and very high in fibre and popular in dishes like Sukiyaki and long-simmered stews where it absorbs the flavour of the broth.
